The Churnet Belle: Beginner Friendly and Free
Share
If you’ve ever wanted to make your own bag but felt a little unsure where to start, you’re not alone.
Bag making can feel overwhelming at first — there are so many materials, techniques, and patterns to choose from. That’s exactly why I created The Churnet Belle.
This is my very first bag pattern, and I designed it with one goal in mind:
To help you create a beautiful, professional-looking bag — even if you’re still quite new to bag making.

The Churnet Belle is named after the river that runs through the valley where I grew up, so it feels quite special to me.
But more importantly, it’s a pattern that fills a gap I see all the time with customers in my shop.
Many bag makers:
- aren’t complete beginners
- but don’t yet feel confident tackling more complex patterns
They want something that:
- looks polished
- feels structured
- and is actually useful to carry
👉 That’s exactly what this pattern is designed to do.

One of the biggest frustrations with beginner patterns is that the finished result can sometimes feel… a bit underwhelming.
The Churnet Belle is different.
It’s designed to be:
- ✔ Simple to follow
- ✔ Step-by-step with clear instructions
- ✔ Achievable on a domestic sewing machine
But the finished bag includes:
- An adjustable crossbody strap
- A hidden zip pocket under the flap
- An interior slip pocket
- A clean, structured shape that holds its form beautifully
👉 So you end up with something that feels like a proper bag, not just a practice project.

This pattern gently introduces key bag-making techniques without overcomplicating things.
You’ll learn:
- how to work with interfacing for structure
- how to insert a zip pocket
- how to attach hardware
- how to assemble a bag neatly and confidently
It’s the kind of project that helps everything start to “click”.
This pattern has been carefully tested and refined by a group of bag makers of all skill levels — from beginners to more experienced makers.

Because this is my first pattern, I wanted to make it as accessible as possible.

One of my favourite things about running Bobbin Girl is seeing the bags you create.
If you make a Churnet Belle, I’d absolutely love to see it — you can share your make with me here and I may feature it in my newsletter to inspire other makers.
