Why I Prefer Triangle Rings Over D Rings for Bag Making

If you’ve ever looked closely at one of my handmade bags, you’ll probably notice one piece of hardware that appears again and again: the triangle ring.

Triangle rings have been around for years, and while trends in bag shapes, fabrics and styles come and go, they’ve quietly remained a constant. For me, they’re a perfect example of hardware that is both practical and beautiful.

Here’s why I reach for triangle rings time after time when I’m designing and making bags.

They Look More Dressy

Compared to D rings, triangle rings have a slightly more refined feel. The clean angles and balanced shape give a bag a more polished, finished look, whether it’s an everyday crossbody or something a little more special.

Even on casual fabrics, triangle rings add a subtle touch of elegance that helps elevate the overall design.

They’re Sturdier and More Secure

One of the biggest practical advantages of a triangle ring is its structure. The closed triangular shape distributes weight more evenly than a D ring, making it feel sturdier and more robust — especially important for bags that are designed to carry a bit of weight.

When I’m making a bag that needs to stand up to everyday use, I want hardware that feels reassuringly solid, and triangle rings consistently deliver that.

They Shine Brighter

This might sound like a small detail, but it makes a noticeable difference. Because of their shape, triangle rings catch and reflect the light beautifully. They tend to look brighter and more eye-catching than D rings, which can sometimes appear flatter.

The Strap Sits Neatly (No Slipping)

With D rings, straps can sometimes slip or shift, especially when the bag is worn crossbody. Over time, this can make the strap look twisted or untidy.

Triangle rings naturally guide the strap into place. The strap sits neatly within the ring, stays aligned, and keeps the bag looking tidy and well-finished when worn.

In short: it just sits prettier.

A Better Anchor Point for Hooks

Another reason I love triangle rings is how well they work with snap hooks.

A snap hook has its own dedicated point to anchor into on a triangle ring, rather than sliding around as it can on a D ring. This keeps the hook aligned, reduces movement, and gives a much cleaner, more intentional look to the finished bag.

It’s one of those details that bag makers really notice — and it makes a big difference to how the bag behaves in use

Timeless, Practical, and Never Out of Style

For me, triangle rings tick every box. They’re timeless, practical, sturdy, and they enhance the look of a bag rather than distracting from it.
